EDIFICE: Structural monitoring with AI integration

The EDIFICE experiment, led by BALTA SRL, has achieved recognition as a winner in the first SUSTAIN Eurocluster Open Call, an initiative aimed at transform structural health monitoring through the integration of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and digital twin technologies.

The EDIFICE initiative focuses on addressing critical challenges in civil infrastructure by utilizing AI-based methodologies for structural health monitoring and data-driven decision-making. The project’s primary objectives include enhancing the resilience of buildings against extreme events, such as earthquakes, and optimizing operational performance through predictive maintenance and advanced sensor data analysis. These innovations aim to reduce system failures, optimize plant performance, and lower carbon emissions, ultimately contributing to sustainable urban development.

A hallmark of the EDIFICE project is its multidisciplinary approach, which combines real-world data with numerical simulations to offer comprehensive solutions for infrastructure management. The resulting AI-driven platform not only supports real-time monitoring but also integrates with digital twin technologies to create highly accurate models of buildings under observation. These models empower building administrators and energy managers to make informed decisions, aligning energy usage strategies with sustainability goals and enabling a significant reduction in environmental impact.

The challenges faced by the EDIFICE team, such as the assembly and instrumentation of a full-scale test structure, have been met with determination and technical expertise. Their work has laid the foundation for groundbreaking applications in smart cities, where integrated systems of sensors and AI-driven analytics are essential for managing complex urban environments.

This recognition by the SUSTAIN Eurocluster Open Call affirms the EDIFICE project’s role as a pioneer in sustainable and technologically advanced infrastructure solutions. It highlights BALTA SRL’s commitment to fostering innovation that not only addresses current challenges but also contributes to a more resilient and energy-efficient future for European cities and beyond.
